Although literacy is not an occupation or performance skills that is explicitly define in the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework 4, functional literacy skills are embedded in many of our everyday activities. Our clients are frequently faced with functional literacy barriers that interfere with their participation in everyday activities and occupations. Functional literacy tasks can include reading books for leisure activities, reading medication bottles, using technology to pay bills, and completing forms. The barriers that functional literacy challenges pose to participation are magnified for our client's who have are from the underserved population. Occupational therapy can provide client centered assessment and intervention for families living in poverty and clients who are in the criminal justice system that focuses on task modification, adaptation to promote access to desired and required meaningful everyday activities and ensuring occupational justice.
